WRITING PRACTICE: linkers.

A text should have "linkers" or special words that show the logical connection between or among concepts. Below you can find a list with some examples.

Linking Expressions


Contrast
This exercise will give you the chance to practise some of the common linking words and expressions that are used to express contrast. For example, 'although', 'despite' etc.
Addition
This exercise looks at words and expressions like 'moreover', 'in addition' etc.
Purpose or reason
This exercise will give you practice in expressing purpose or reason with expressions like, 'as a result', 'owing to' etc.
Time
This exercise focuses on linking words that express time, such as 'at first', 'eventually' etc.

  • copy SOME of the examples from the interactive excercises (choose the ones you would like to remember, those that were NEW for you or those that you consider essential).

3.  Causative verb forms are used to talk about getting something done by somebody else.

  • I got my hair cut in the morning. 
  • You must have your hair washed. 
  • You must get that carpet cleaned.
Causative forms are also possible with make. Causative forms of make often imply the idea that somebody has a certain authority over somebody else. We use the  infinitive without to.
  • I made him do the homework.
  • He made her cook dinner.
  • She made me accompany her.
